Mission of Children's Faith Formation

At Our Lady of Mount Carmel, we are committed to the faith formation of our youth in an enriching learning environment. The following core elements form the foundation and strength of the program.

  • Parents are recognized as the primary educators of their children.
  • The doctrine of the Catholic faith is presented in its fullness and entirety as both knowledge to be learned and life to be lived.
  • Sacramental life is central to developing the Catholic faith.
  • Prayer is necessary for growth in spiritual life, including Mass, personal and communal prayer.
  • Mary's example, as the first disciple of Jesus, is our model.
  • The Gospel message and moral life expressed in the Ten Commandments, Beatitudes, and Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy are cultivated and practiced in our everyday lives.

Scripture by Heart

Praying with Scripture is at the heart of our Christian education.  The Word of God is an inspiration for conducting our daily lives regardless of our age.  As with all Scripture by Heart, our main goal is to have your children praying these verses with you, at home and on their own.  We also hope that you will discuss the meaning and importance of Scripture and how to relate God’s Word in Scripture to everyday living.  When Scripture is prayed, studied, and repeated daily, we begin to know it in our hearts.

Each Sunday introduce the Bible verse and encourage your children to “learn the passage by heart”.

Click the following word of the month to view the Bible verses your child is learning as a student in the Scripture by Heart Program.

January - "RESPONSIBILITY"

February - "LOVE"

March - "RECONCILIATION"

April - "PEACE"

May - "KINDNESS"

October - "RESPECT"

November - "GRATITUDE"

December - "GIVING"

Praying with Scripture is at the heart of our Christian education. The Word of God is an inspiration for conducting our daily lives regardless of our age. As with all Scripture by Heart, our main goal is to have your children praying these verses with you and on their own. We also hope that you will discuss with your children the meaning and importance of Scripture and how to relate God’s Word in Scripture to everyday living. When Scripture is prayed, studied, and repeated daily, we begin to know it in our hearts.

Each Sunday the teachers introduce a Bible verse that the children are encouraged to “learn by heart” for the following Sunday and ready to recite them. Hopefully, you will include these verses in your daily prayers. Once a month we will be sending the verse home with your children. Please keep these cards in a convenient place and refer to them each day. These verses will undoubtedly add inspiration to your daily prayer.

Program Fees

The fees for children attending the elementary and junior high Faith Formation Programs are $85 for one child, $115 for two children, and $125 for a family having three or more children. Please contact Sr. Rosalie if you are unable to pay the tuition. It is far more important that your children learn about their faith, and arrangements may be made to assist your family.

In Case of an Earthquake or any Disaster event:

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Faith Formation Office has worked diligently to make sure that our students and staff are well prepared for an emergency. If an earthquake or another type of disaster occurs, our staff will respond accordingly to the School Emergency Response Plan issued by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. Our response includes first aid, childcare & release. In the event of an earthquake or another type of disaster, please drive safely to the school and park your vehicle outside the gated school grounds. Teachers will be with your child(ren) outside the classrooms at a safe assembly area—the school field or the playground area.

For safety reasons, Faith Formation personnel will release the child(ren) only to a parent or the person whose name is listed on the Student’s Emergency Form. If there is a delay in your response due to the severity of the event, we do have water, food, first aid supplies to care for the children until your arrival.

Dear Parents,

In the Gospels, Jesus tells the crowd a parable about a farmer who scatters seeds.

"Those seeds sown on good soil are the ones who listen to the word of God and take it to heart" Mark 4:19

"As for the seeds that fall on rich soil, they are the ones who, when they have the work, embrace it with a generous and good heart, and bear fruit through perseverance." Luke 8:15

As parents, you are 'farmers' who care for the seeds sown by our loving God.  You have the honor and responsibility to provide good soil for your children to grow and nourish their faith. You fertilize what God has sown by teaching your children how to pray and sharing Scripture and Tradition with them, by participating and explaining the Mass. Modeling simple acts of kindness, generosity, and honesty also help to plant the see of God's kingdom in your children's hearts.

Sincerely,

Sister Rosalie
