"Peace" is the Easter greeting of Jesus. Today again we hear Jesus offer "Peace" to his disciples. Speaking at the Last Supper he says: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you" (John 14:23-29). The deep peace of Jesus within us will always be there, no matter what we face, if we are walking with God each day and our hearts are open to the Holy Spirit whom Jesus promises in today's Gospel: "The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything."

It was through openness to the Holy Spirit that the Church dealt with the divisions at the very beginning over the major question of imposing Jewish practices on Non-Jews who were becoming Christians(as we hear from the First Reading today from the Acts of the Apostles 15:1ff). Peace and the life of Christ are offered to all in the decisions of the First Council of the Church, the Council of Jerusalem. In these last two weeks of the Easter season, let us pray that the Holy Spirit guide us so we walk always in the peace of Christ.

* Children from our Sunday morning Religious Education Program will help us celebrate the 10:00 AM Mass this Sunday and will also celebrate First Holy Communion this coming Saturday, May 7th at 10:00 AM. Please keep the children and their families in your prayers.

* In the Western United States we will celebrate the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord on Sunday, May 8 this year rather than on Ascension Thursday. Rome has granted permission for this so we can celebrate on Sunday all the elements of the Paschal Mystery of Christ: the life, death, resurrection and Ascension of the Lord.

* As mentioned last Sunday, Archbishop Gomez of our Archdiocese of Los Angeles has appointed Father Lawrence Seyer as Pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish beginning July 1, 2016. He will take the place of Father Steve Downes who will retire as Pastor on June 30th at 75 years of age. Father Lawrence was ordained a priest in 1997 and for the last eleven years has served as Pastor at Our Savior Parish & USC Caruso Catholic Center. A short biography of Father Lawrence will be found elsewhere in this bulletin. We look forward to his arrival at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish and pray God's blessings on his ministry here.

* In retirement Father Steve Downes, our Pastor, will continue to live at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Rectory and hopes to support and assist our new Pastor, Father Lawrence, as needed. Father Steve also hopes to continue ministry to the sick in the parish, the community and at Cottage Hospital.
