PASTOR'S MESSAGE MAY 17, 2015

THE FEAST OF THE ASCENSION

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord.  In the First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles (1:1-11) we hear that Jesus "was lifted up and a cloud took him from their sight."  This was a way of saying that Jesus was ending his frequent appearances to the First Christians after Easter and was entering into the timeless, glorious presence of God.

The Second Reading from Ephesians 1:17ff speaks of his glory and exaltation with God "at his right hand in the heavens, far above every principality, authority, power and dominion..."  In these human words Paul is telling us of the cosmic dimensions of Christ's victory over sin, death, Satan, all forces of evil everywhere.  Christ's glory and light fill all of us and our whole universe.

At the time of the Ascension (in the First Reading today) Jesus says: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be my witnesses..." Between Ascension and Pentecost (next Sunday) the First Christians gathered in prayer with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, in Jerusalem waiting for the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.  May we also pray this week: "Come, Holy Spirit, Come!  Fill our hearts with the fire of your love! Bring us to life anew as Christians so we can be witnesses to Jesus in our world."

* We ask your special prayers for the coming of the Holy Spirit upon 25 high school students from our parish who will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation through the ministry of Monsignor Michael Jennett, Episcopal Vicar for the Santa Barbara Region, at Holy Eucharist at 4:30 PM this Sunday.

May the Holy Spirit come upon all with the fullness of the gifts of Wisdom and Understanding, Right Judgment and Courage, Knowledge and Love, and Reverence in God's Service.

As mentioned in last Sunday's bulletin, the average collection would need to reach $8,500 each Sunday to avoid another parish operating deficit for the fiscal year which ends on June 30th.  Your generous contributions fund all the parish worship, religious, educational and service programs of the parish.
